Introduction

YinzMart.com founder Jurgen Koster’s entrepreneurial roots run deep. Inspired by his mother, who launched a print shop when he was eleven and built a business adapting to different teams and events, Jurgen learned early on that business is fundamentally about serving others. Observing how fragmented and convoluted it can be to discover and support local small businesses, Jurgen set out to build a unified solution. He created YinzMart.com, a centralized digital marketplace designed to connect small businesses and vendors across Western Pennsylvania with a regional customer base of over 4 million people.

Challenge and Goals

When Jurgen joined the Innovation Forge Startup Accelerator, a program facilitated by Penn State’s Corner Launchbox and the Digital Foundry at New Kensington, YinzMart.com was in the prototyping stage. Beyond refining the digital platform, Jurgen faced challenges around maintaining strategic focus, establishing a strong brand identity, and positioning the marketplace effectively against traditional consignment shops and generic online retailers.

To move from a functional prototype to a scalable platform, Jurgen needed to address critical business and technical requirements. His primary goals were to refine YinzMart.com’s value proposition, establish a clear market differentiation strategy, and resolve technical hurdles related to multi-vendor payment processing and real-world sales operations.

Outcomes and Results

Through the accelerator, Jurgen worked with mentors at the Digital Foundry and The Corner to refine his market approach. Using visual market research and strategic positioning methods, Jurgen clarified how YinzMart.com’s direct vendor model provides a distinct advantage over standard consignment models, giving small businesses greater control and immediate returns.

To support both online ecommerce and live event retail, Jurgen tackled a critical technical milestone by developing an instant automated vendor payment system. This feature allows payments to be automatically split and distributed to individual vendors in real time, during online transactions as well as in-person pop-up events and festivals.

Impact and Next Steps

Since participating in the accelerator, YinzMart.com has achieved measurable commercial and operational progress. The platform successfully managed ticketing and vendor sales for the Pittsburgh Hot Sauce Festival, proving the reliability of its automated payment split system at scale. The technology has also created new business-to-business opportunities, including partnering with local retail shops to automate their vendor payout processes and save shop owners valuable administrative time.

Looking ahead, YinzMart.com is focusing on expanding its technical capabilities by integrating barcode scanning for in-person transactions, adding auction and booking features for vendors, and exploring a physical footprint in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. By pairing software automation with community-focused commerce, YinzMart.com continues to build a sustainable digital ecosystem for local small businesses.

“The program helped me understand that some of the best business thinking comes from improving your community. Working with the team gave me the clarity to differentiate our model and build solutions that directly serve local vendors. Having a trusted network for guidance and technical feedback has been invaluable.”
